Summary from Goodreads: Wilhelmina has a hundred identities.
She is a princess. When the Indigo Kingdom conquered her homeland, Wilhelmina and other orphaned children of nobility were taken to Skyvale, the Indigo Kingdom’s capital. Ten years later, they are the Ospreys, experts at stealth and theft. With them, Wilhelmina means to take back her throne.
She is a spy. Wil and her best friend, Melanie, infiltrate Skyvale Palace to study their foes. They assume the identities of nobles from a wraith-fallen kingdom, but enemies fill the palace, and Melanie’s behavior grows suspicious. With Osprey missions becoming increasingly dangerous and their leader more unstable, Wil can’t trust anyone.
She is a threat. Wraith is the toxic by-product of magic, and for a century using magic has been forbidden. Still the wraith pours across the continent, reshaping the land and animals into fresh horrors. Soon it will reach the Indigo Kingdom. Wilhelmina’s magic might be the key to stopping the wraith, but if the vigilante Black Knife discovers Wil’s magic, she will vanish like all the others.
Jodi Meadows introduces a vivid new fantasy full of intrigue, romance, dangerous magic, and one girl’s battle to reclaim her place in the world.

This book had a really slow start for me. At some point it picked up a tiny bit and because more interesting. I like Wilhelmina and was really intrigued by her world and he story. I struggled with the concept of the wraith - like I just didn't really get it. The middle of the book moved at a decent pace, but was a bit unbelievable. The characters was interesting, for the most part, but none of them stuck out to me as extraordinarily well developed. The plot twists were fun, but a bit predictable. The ending just annoyed me. Overall, I liked the book and enjoyed reading it, but there really isn't much to say beyond that.

  1. This is one I want to read, because I like Jodi Meadows, although her books can be a little bit wordy to get through at times. Your review is good! Thanks!

  2. I keep seeing so much hype surrounding this one, and it is making me more than slightly nervous. I keep hearing it's either really unbelievable slow or just flipping fantastic. I'll have to go into this one a bit more wearily, great review!

    1. I saw a ton of positive hype around this one, but I definitely think you have the right mindset

  3. I see so many glowing reviews for this one so it's refreshing to find someone who didn't completely love it. I am nervous to get to it in case I don't end up loving it. I have an ARC of the sequel, so definitely need to get to my copy of The Orphan Queen asap.

  4. Aww, I was never interested in this in the first place, but maybe I'll pick it up later in the future, with lower expectations. I hope your next read is better and more believable!!
