Book Previews - Bookish Discussion

What are your thoughts on book previews?
That chunk of pages at the end of a book, where there is a sample of a few chapters of the author's next book, which depending on when you are reading the book the previewed book may or may not be published.

Personally, I NEVER  EVER read the preview, especially if it is the next book in the series and here's why:

1. I HATE spoilers and a sneak peak of a book just feels spoilery to me

2. I don't like to re-read things necessarily. So, if it's a series and I know I am going to read the next book in the series, I just skip the preview. Or, if it's some unrelated title that I'm not sure about, I'd rather read the synopsis than a chapter or two.

3. I am in impatient person. Waiting for the next book is hard enough as it is, I am convinced that reading a snippet of a book that I want will only make the waiting worse.

4. I am worried a preview would influence my review. I am the type of person who drafts my review immediately after reading a book, whether it's in a notebook, on my phone, or on blogger. I am always a little worried that if I start reading a preview, I might get confused.

What about those preview books?
The freebies that allow you to read the first few (or more) chapters of a book for free.

Yup, I NEVER download or read those either. One time I accidentally selected one of these samplers in the "Read Now" section of Netgalley, luckily I realized it was just a sample before I started reading it and I quickly removed it from my shelves. (I wonder if this hurts my percentage?)

Anyways, I'm curious - How do you feel about book previews? What are your philosophies when you spot them at the end of a book? Do you download the free samples?

  1. I never read the preview either and it's not for spoiler reasons. I just think the idea of showing us and holding a few chapters of the sequel over our faces like bait is so mean lmfao! It's like there to taunt us that we have a sample but we don't have the actual second book in front of us. Awesome discussion :D

    1. seriously! I wonder if book publishers just assume this a good marketing tactic? I am way to impatient to read a sample and then wait.

  2. Great discussion! I personally don't read previews either as I don't like to be kept waiting for the rest of the story. Also, I've nominated you for the Sisterhood of the World Blogger Award - http://bmariebooks.blogspot.co.uk/2015/08/sisterhood-of-world-bloggers-award.html

  3. I HATE book previews if they are a sequel, especially when the sequel isn't out yet. But I kind of want to utilize the Goodreads previews for books I haven't read yet, just to see if I would like them (like standalones or the first in series)

    1. like a try before you buy? I guess that would be a good way to save money or spend a little more wisely. But I totally agree, when the bok is not readily available, there is NO way I am reading a preview.

  4. This is such a good discussion, I hate hate hate spoilers! I'm currently waiting for Queen of Shadows and I can no longer go on twitter because everyone is talking about it.. such a shame to wait a whole year and to have it ruined for you. It completely depends on the book if I read previews or not but if I do read them I always read at least a little close to the release date to be get excited!

  5. I'm the same. I hate spoilers. I don't read the previews at the end of books. I also don't read reviews of books I know I'm going to read. I only read them either after I've already read it myself, or if I'm on the fence about wanting to read something. Great post!

    1. Ugh spoilers ruin everything.

I guess if a book is published, a preview is a great way to decide whether or not to buy a book, but I am too impulsive for that lol
